In its Diversity & Gender Equality Plan, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) has committed to continuously maintaining and adapting guidelines on gender-sensitive language. With this language guide, the Staff Unit Diversity & Inclusion offers suggestions for gender- and diversity-sensitive communication for TUM members. These are internal university recommendations that are not binding.
Legal documents such as legal and administrative regulations and contracts are also excluded from these recommendations. These documents should continue to follow the legally required format, such as using paired naming. Whether or not gender-sensitive language is used in teaching or exams does not affect the assessment criteria or decisions.
The TUM language guide is published exclusively in German, as it is specifically tailored to the linguistic and cultural characteristics of the German-speaking world. Nevertheless, many of the recommendations for gender- and diversity-sensitive communication can also be applied to other languages. Regardless of the language, TUM cultivates an appreciative and reflective use of language in communication.
