Working with disabilities or chronic illnesses
TUM actively encourages the employment of severely disabled persons and supports them in their working life. The university has committed to this goal in its integration agreement “TUMiteinander” in the sense of the SGB IX and the “Allgemeines Gleichbehandlungsgesetz” (AGG). Various services at TUM and outside of TUM offer counselling and support concerning working with a disability or chronic illness.
Counselling
The first contact point for employees of TUM with disabilities or chronic illnesses is the Disabled Persons Office. Further information and counselling offers at TUM can be found here.

Information on hiring procedures
Information on what to consider when hiring and employing people with disabilities or chronic illnesses can be found on the myTUM portal. You will also find information on this in the descriptions of the recruitment processes (only available in German, login with TUM ID):
If relevant applications are received, recruitment managers should engage the Disabled Persons Office early in the process. Applicants can also reach out to them for advice.
Outside of TUM, Agentur für Arbeit is responsible for advising people with disabilities on employment law issues and career choices.
The Munich Student Union maintains apartments that are specially adapted to suit the needs of disabled students. Pfennigparade München rents barrier-free apartments for physically disabled people.
The MVG provides comprehensive information on barrier-free access in Munich's public transport system.
If the degree of disability is 50% or more (a severe disability), the person can apply for a disabled person's card at the Bavarian Center for Families and Social Affairs (ZBFS). This card includes a special protection against dismissal and card holders can use the local public transport system for free.
The Behindertensport München offers a broad spectrum of sports programmes. Additionally, you can look for further programmes with the Zentraler Hochschulsport München.
- Municipal counseling for the city of Munich and towns Freising and Garching is provided by the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities of the City of Munich, the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities of Freising, and the Advisory Council for Persons with Disabilities of Garching.
- If you seek advice on supra-regional issues and problems, you can turn to the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities of the Bavarian State Government and the Federal Government Commissioner for Matters relating to Disabled Persons.
- The Bavarian Center for Families and Social Affairs (ZBFS) is responsible for issues of profession and disability, financial aids and living with disabilities or chronic illnesses in Bavaria.
- As the supra-communal social welfare authority, the district of Upper Bavaria provides support and services for disabled persons.
