International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November
On 25 November 1960, three opponents of the regime in the Dominican Republic, the Mirabal sisters, known as "las mariposas" (the butterflies), were abducted, raped and murdered on the orders of the dictator Trujillo. Her political work was aimed at overthrowing the dictatorship and resisting the sexual enslavement of women. In 1961, Latin American feminists proclaimed this day as a day of resistance against violence against women, and in 1999 it was declared an international day of action by the United Nations. On this day, actions to combat discrimination and violence against women take place all over the world.
