As part of its Diversity & Gender Equality Plan, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) promotes gender- and diversity-sensitive communication. The Diversity & Inclusion Guidelines combine practical recommendations for diversity-sensitive event management and imagery as well as gender- and diversity-sensitive communication, along with the TUM Language Guide and a Diversity Calendar. Furthermore, recommendations for the thoughtful use of AI-supported image generation tools (prompting) are shared. Researchers at TUM have investigated how text-to-image generators in different languages handle gender roles. The results show that the models not only reflect gender stereotypes but even reinforce them.
The TUM Language Guide is published exclusively in German, as it is specifically tailored to the linguistic and cultural characteristics of the German-speaking world. Nevertheless, many of the recommendations for gender- and diversity-sensitive communication can also be applied to other languages. Regardless of the language, TUM cultivates an appreciative and reflective use of language in communication. The recommendations are non-binding and serve only as guidance. Legally binding documents—such as contracts or administrative regulations—are exempt from this and must continue to use the prescribed wording. The decision to use gender-neutral language in teaching and examinations or to refrain from doing so remains neutral in terms of assessment.

Promote diversity through thoughtful visuals: Images shape how we perceive and communicate diversity. This guide provides practical recommendations for selecting and creating imagery that authentically represents people of different cultural backgrounds, abilities, genders, and age groups, while avoiding stereotypes and tokenism. The aim of this document is to help discover how to emphasize shared experiences, reflect internal plurality, and ensure accessibility in visual communication across all TUM-university contexts.
Inclusive event planning goes beyond logistics: it’s about creating spaces where everyone feels welcome, respected and safe. At TUM, we recognize that participants bring diverse backgrounds, identities, and needs to every event. Diversity-sensitive event management ensures fair access and fosters a positive atmosphere for all – regardless of gender, culture, ability, age, or belief. The checklist helps you plan events that reflect TUM’s commitment to gender equality, diversity and inclusion.
A diversity calendar provides an overview of important cultural, religious, and social holidays as well as commemorative days throughout the year. It aims to raise awareness of diversity and support event scheduling. In this context, TUM refers to the Calendar from “Charta der Vielfalt”, which is freely accessible online and continuously updated.
