Inclusion, technical aids and medical aspects of disabilities and chronic illnesses are research areas at TUM. The following Chairs and fields represent the varieties of issues addressed at TUM:
Sociology of Diversity Chair, TUM Department of Sport and Health Sciences // As of november 2020: Sociology of Diversity Unit
The Sociology of Diversity Chair of Prof. Elisabeth Wacker conducts research at the intersection between health, society and sport and focuses on issues of exclusion and inclusion especially from the perspective of disability and impairment.
Chair of Preventive Paediatrics, TUM Department of Sport and Health Sciences (available only in German)
The Chair of Preventive Pediatrics of Prof. Renate Oberhoffer conducts the study 'TKMS' – influence of therapeutic rock climbing on multiple sclerosis (MS), which investigates how rock climbing can lead to improving the quality of life and the physical symptoms of MS patients.

The field Didactics of Informatics of Prof. Peter Hubwieser conducts research concerning inclusion in informatics classes in schools.
Chair of Social Paediatrics, kbo Children’s Center Munich, TUM School of Medicine
The Chair of Social Paediatrics of Prof. Volker Mall organizes the training series “Inclusion – medical- therapeutic aspects”, which aims to facilitate exchange between experts from the fields of education, medicine and therapy. Furthermore, the Chair has set up a training programme for children and youths with multiple sclerosis and their parents.
Research Center for Children’s Orthopaedics and Cerebral Palsy, TUM School of Medicine
The Research Center for Children’s Orthopaedics and Cerebral Palsy of Prof. Renée Lampe focuses primarily on the development of health in disabled children and young people with neuroorthopedic disease as a basis for their social and vocational integration.
Department for Prevention, Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine, TUM School of Medicine
The Department for Prevention, Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine of Prof. Martin Halle inter alia conducts research on cardiovascular disease and the improvement of cancer rehabilitation. The Kuratorium für Prävention und Rehabilitation an der Technischen Universität München e.V. is connected to the Department; it offers rehabilitation sports programmes, amongst others also for people with neurological disabilities and MS patients.
Institute for Cognitive Systems, TUM Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering
The Institute for Cognitive Systems of Prof. Gordon Cheng focusses on understanding and creating cognitive systems in robotics and developed an artificial skin that can sense tactile stimuli and thus has contributed to the international project “Walk again”. The aim of the project is to make it possible for quadriplegic people to learn to walk again.
Institute for Human-Machine Communication, TUM Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering
The Associated Institute for Audio Information Processing of Prof. Bernhard Seeber investigates the information processing in the human auditory system and uses this knowledge to improve hearing devices and audio systems.
