Kindergartens are for pre-school children. Children are educated and cared for in these institutions from the age of 3 until they start school. The groups comprise children of mixed ages and are overseen, depending on the hours of care, by two or three education professionals and assistants. Each group contains a maximum of twenty-five children.

In this form of childcare, children are entrusted to a day-nanny. The day-nanny looks after up to five children in their own home with flexible hours of at least ten hours per week.

In collective child-minding, several child-minders work together to look after the children entrusted to them in rented premises that are not privately used. Groups of six to ten children are looked after by two qualified minders. The groups can comprise children of mixed ages. If more than eight children are being looked after in a collective child-minding situation, at least one of the minders must be an education professional.

An au pair is a person from another country aged between eighteen and twenty-five who works for their host family in exchange for board, lodging and pocket-money.
